Grading Scale

The grading scale used for classes at West high is as follows:

90-100= A    80-89= B 70-79= C 60-69= D 59 and lower= F (failing)

Grade point averages are based on a 4.0 system. Weighted grades for some courses are also available.

Accelerated and AP Courses

AP Courses give students access to rigorous college level work. AP courses build confidence in students and help them learn the essential time management and study skills needed for college and career success. These are weighted classes. Accelerated Courses are rigorous, weighted classes for students at the freshman, sophomore and junior grade levels. These courses are designed to help prepare the students for taking AP courses.

Progress Reports

Our school year is divided into 2 semesters. Progress reports will be sent once between the beginning of the year and midpoint, once at midpoint and then again between midpoint and the end of the semester. Parents will receive a total of 6 progress reports throughout the year. Progress reports are sent home via email. Should parents wish to check grades on a more regular basis, they may sign up for access to the FOCUS Parent Portal Account for daily access to grades, attendance and tardy records.

Tutoring

Students who need additional assistance with academics outside the classroom have options available to them. Many teachers will stay after school by appointment to work with students individually while some teachers offer regular after school help sessions. A+ students offer peer tutoring in the library after school Monday through Thursday until 3:30. Contact the Guidance Office or the A+ office for more information.

Activities

Fort Zumwalt West offers a variety of clubs, MSHSAA sports and activities of which students can participate. Contact the Activities Office for more information.

Admission

The admission price for Varsity football, basketball and wrestling events is $5 for adults and $2 for students. JV and freshman level events are $2 for adults and $1 for students. Children under the age of 6 are free to attend.

*Tournament admission costs may vary. In the event that a JV or Freshman game precedes a Varsity game, Varsity admission rates will apply.

Athletes are admitted free of charge to an athletic event during the season with which they are an athlete. *They must present their student ID with the athletic seasonal sticker on the back for free admission.

*Students who qualify for free/reduced lunches are eligible for a student pass upon request.

Family passes may be purchased for $50. Passes are good for all Fort Zumwalt School District Athletic events for the school year, excluding tournaments and state playoffs.

Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in a Missouri State High School Athletic Association (MSHSAA) sanctioned activity, “a student in grades 9-12 must have earned the preceding semester of attendance, a minimum of 3.0 units of credit… and shall currently be enrolled in and regularly attending courses that offer 3.0 units of credit.” Students must also have a current physical on file with the Activities Office.

Good Sportsmanship

The Fort Zumwalt School District and MSHSAA believe in the practice of good sportsmanship and a positive approach to sports. Athletes, fans and parents all represent FZW and should remember to promote good sportsmanship at all extracurricular events on and off FZW campus. Good sportsmanship is defined as a combination of strong values and good attitudes. Respect, fairness, courtesy and graceful acceptance of the result are all examples of good sportsmanship. Booing, vulgar language and/or other signs of poor sportsmanship are not tolerated at any activity.

Spirit

Students are encouraged to positively support their peers and school by attending school activities. A schedule of events is available on our website fzwactivites.com

*School colors: Purple, Silver, Black  *School Mascot: Jaguar

Physicals

All students wishing to participate in a MSHSAA sport or activity must have a current physical on file to participate. Physicals, in most circumstances, are valid for two years or 730 days from the date of issuance, unless noted otherwise by the medical professional. It is the responsibility of the athlete to ensure a valid physical is on file with the West High Activities Office. Physicals must be submitted before a student is permitted to begin sports practice or tryouts.

  • In addition to a current physical, the following forms must still be completed and turned in each year for a student to participate in sports/activities:

    • All MSHSAA annual paperwork found on the Activities website

    • Emergency Contact Information

Fall Sports Kick Off/ CAPS Meeting

Fall Sports begin on August 12. The Fall CAPS (Coaches/ Athletes/ Parents/ School) meeting is scheduled for August 19 at 6:00 PM in the auditorium. Each athlete new to West High, along with a parent/guardian, must attend this meeting to participate in the fall season. Parents will also have the opportunity to meet and speak with coaches.

Winter and Spring kickoff dates as well as CAPS meetings associated with those seasons will be announced at a later date.  Please tell your student to listen for announcements at school and to be on the lookout for that information on our website.

Attendance/Sign Outs

Student Absences

Regular school attendance is vital to the academic success of any student. It is also habit forming and builds a positive lifelong pattern. When your child is going to be absent, please contact the school office at 636-379-0300. You may leave a message if there is no answer. If your child is absent and we do not receive a call from you, we will call you to verify the absence. Parents have 48 hours to verify each absence.

Attendance Letters

After a student misses 10 days during the school year, a form letter will be generated and sent to parents. These letters are meant to be of assistance to parents and school officials in helping to better track a student’s attendance. Should a parent receive one of these letters, it is helpful to contact the student’s principal to inform him/her of any special circumstances regarding the student (an extended illness, hospitalization, etc.) as the school may be able to assist you in other ways. If parents have previously reported absences, the letter serves only to compare records.

Sign Outs

Should you need to sign your child out before the end of the school day, please follow these procedures. If the early pick up is planned and your student is aware (doctor appointment, family plans, etc.), please call attendance that day with plenty of notice. Attendance will send your student an email for sign-out instead of a pass. Please remind your student to be on the lookout for this. Your student simply needs to open this email and show their teacher. Your student should then go to attendance to officially sign out. If your student has a phone they can use the QR code outside the attendance windows to electronically sign out. Of course things come up that are unplanned that may require you to sign your child out with less notice, or situations where this process will not be ideal.  We are happy to send a traditional pass in those cases.

Chromebooks/Chromebook Insurance

All incoming freshmen to West High will be issued a Google Chromebook for school use.  Students are required to pay $15 for the Device Protection Plan.  Payment can be made during the online registration process or through FOCUS Parent Portal under the Fines/Fees tab. This insurance plan will cover the device for the school year, as well as accidental damages caused by liquid, fire, electrical surges, or drops.  Damages for a related incident (i.e. screen and keyboard repairs from an accidental drop of the device) are covered under the plan and considered to be one incident.  There is no charge for the first deductible; for future deductibles, however, students will be charged $25 per incident.  The insurance will not, however, cover items that are lost (device and/or charges) or stolen.  Students will be provided specific information regarding proper use and care of their Chromebook at the start of the school year.

Clinic Services

Medications

Students, per district guidelines, are not permitted to carry any prescription or over-the-counter medications. Any prescription medications that need to be taken during the school day are to be given to the nurse, accompanied by a note from the prescribing physician. Should a student need to take aspirin/Tylenol/Benadryl, the over the counter medication consent form must be signed and on file in the clinic.

Specific Medical Conditions

Should your student have any specific medical needs, be certain to include that information on the emergency information sheet. This information is entered into the school’s database. Should there be any changes at any time during the school year, be sure to contact the Clinic.

Deliveries and Messages

Deliveries

  • Any emergency situations that may arise requiring delivery of items to students must be brought to the main entrance and left on the table in the lobby. Students will be notified to come pick-up the item.

  • Flowers and other gifts delivered for students will be handled as follows:

    • Deliveries will be dropped off at the table in the lobby at the main entrance.

    • Students will be called to the office during passing time. Deliveries of this sort will be done only after all other necessary duties have been completed in the Attendance Office.

  • Please be aware of our district policies on outside food deliveries. Only verified parents, guardians, or family can drop off food for their student. For the safety of our students, no outside food deliveries will be permitted in our building, as we cannot verify who these people are and their actual purpose for entering the building.

Messages

  • Should an emergency arise during the school day and a student needs to be reached, please contact the Attendance Office. These types of messages should be reserved for emergency situations only.

  • Messages for teachers can be given to the school receptionists during regular school hours (6:30am-4:00pm). Teachers may also be contacted via their school email. E-mail addresses are typically as follows: first initial of first name and full last name @ fz.k12.mo.us. (For example edreyer@fz.k12.mo.us)

Discipline

At the start of each school year, all students will be required to view a presentation explaining our policies on discipline. Additionally, all students will be given a student copy of the discipline code and consequences. Students will also receive reminder disciplinary information during the school year. THe hope in distributing this information is that students will understand the consequences of any action before they choose to make any decisions. The Fort Zumwalt School District uses three basic forms of discipline to enforce school policies: detentions (after-school and Saturday detentions are available), Zumwalt Alternative Education Program (ZAEP or in-school suspension), and out-of-school suspension. All correspondence regarding disciplinary consequences are emailed or mailed home to parents/guardians.

**Click here for access to the Fort Zumwalt School District High School Discipline Guidelines

Detentions

After-school detentions are Monday through Thursday. Saturday detentions for all students in the district are in the West High School commons on Saturdays from 8 am until 12 pm. Saturday detentions are not held the Saturday before a school holiday that falls on a Monday or the Saturday after a school holiday that falls on a Friday.

In-School Suspension

The Zumwalt Alternative Education Program (ZAEP) is an in-school suspension program used for intermediate disciplinary problems. This option is particularly helpful when it is desirable to remove a student from the normal school setting for a time while allowing the student to continue class assignments.

Out-of-School Suspension

An out of school suspension will be used for more serious offenses or when the presence of a student constitutes a threat to other students or has a negative effect upon the learning environment. It may also be used when lesser punishments have failed to correct a problem.

Racial Harassment Statement

The Fort Zumwalt Board of Education declares a policy against and prohibits racial harassment. Policy ACA prohibits any oral, written, graphic, or physical conduct related to an individual’s race, color or national origin so as to interfere with or limit their ability to participate in or benefit from programs. Examples of this conduct can include, but are not limited to, racial name calling, graffiti, cartoons of a negative demeanor, racially motivated harassing, threatening or intimidating comments, and physical acts of aggression. Allegations of racial harassment should be reported to the most immediate administrator or the Title VI coordinator, Assistant Superintendent of Student Personnel Services at 636.240.2072.

Sexual Harassment Statement

The school district is committed to providing an environment free from intimidating, hostile, or offensive behavior, verbal or physical conduct, or communication constituting sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is prohibited. Sexual harassment may include things such as sexually oriented jokes, remarks, cartoons, pictures, letters, or physical conduct such as patting or pinching. Allegation of sexual harassment shall be investigated and, if substantiated, corrective disciplinary action taken.

Driving

Student Drivers

Once a Junior or Senior has completed their parking application and it has been processed, they will receive a separate email with the available dates and times for permit pick-up prior to the first day of school. Juniors and Seniors can pick up a parking application in the main office.

Unfortunately, our parking lot cannot accommodate our sophomore class. Our lot is reserved for qualifying juniors and seniors only. Sophomores can inquire in the main office about possible spaces available at the Turtle Creek Pool.

Fines/Fees

Fines and fees can be accumulated from, but are not limited to, fundraisers, athletics, textbooks, library books, and breakfast/lunch charges.

Food Service/Lunch

Student Meals and Account Balances

Breakfast and lunch are served every day at WHS as a part of the Food Service program in the Fort Zumwalt School District. All students have their own meal account and pin number to make purchases in the cafeteria. Please note the USDA Seamless Summer Option Program, which provided all students with a free regular breakfast and lunch in the past, expired on June 30, 2024. This means that students will be required to pay for their regular meals along with any additional a la carte items. Students may “charge” on their account until they reach a $10 deficit. Once a student reaches a negative balance, they will no longer be able to charge a la carte items. Funds may be deposited into students accounts via the FOCUS Parent Portal App, on a computer, or by cash/check at WHS. If your family is in need of assistance with the cost of daily meals, please refer to the information below regarding free/reduced meals.

Use this link for more information regarding Student Nutrition Services, meal prices, and school menus.

Free/Reduced Meal Program

The Fort Zumwalt School District participates in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program.  Children from families whose income has either temporarily or permanently fallen below certain federal guidelines can qualify for free or reduced price meals.  The identity of qualified children is completely confidential and the district goes to great lengths to keep these children anonymous from their peers.  Parents should consider taking advantage of this valuable program should their financial situation warrant participation.  Applications are always available in the Student Nutrition section of the Fort Zumwalt website (link below) as well as the main office at West High.  Applications must be completed annually.  Please note, the Seamless Summer Option Program which provided free regular meals to all students in the past, expired June 30, 2024.

Grad Night

Parent volunteers are needed to assist in the planning of West High’s annual Grad Night. This drug and alcohol-free lock-in is hosted for graduates on the evening of graduation.  Parent assistance is needed to help plan activities, gather donations, purchase prizes/ gifts for graduates, plan fundraising events and volunteer to work the evening of Grad Night. Contact aweiskopf@fz.k12.mo.us for more information.

* Click here for the Grad Night volunteer form.

* GPA calculations will include all courses taken in high school for a letter grade except correspondence courses

Weighted Grades

Advanced courses and college credit receive weighted points in calculating grade point averages. These courses are identified in the Course Description Handbook.

Guidance

West High School provides guidance counseling services to help students achieve the maximum benefits from attending high school. Students may speak with their counselors about college choices and admissions, career planning, improving grades, and/or resolving problems. When a student visits their guidance counselor, the time will consist of group and/or private discussions. Students are encouraged to visit their guidance counselor at least once each semester or as often as they feel the need.

Financial Aid

The Financial Aid Office helps students seek and apply for financial aid and scholarships. Contact the Guidance office for specific information.

Grade Checks

Parents are encouraged to sign up for access to the FOCUS Parent Portal. Through the portal, you may view grades for each student’s classes, as well as view daily attendance and tardy records.

Scheduling

Mid year, students will be given information regarding the next school year. At this time, students will meet with their counselors to pick their classes and plan their schedule in order to fulfill their graduation requirements. Counselors are always available during the regular school year to meet with students and to

conference with parents.

Schedule changes will be considered for a limited time at the beginning of each semester. Changes will not be made so that students can eat lunch with a friend, have a particular teacher, switch into a different class due to friendships, etc. Changes will only be made due to academic and graduation requirement purposes.

Making Appointments

To see their counselor, students need to sign up for an appointment in the Guidance Office. You may sign up for appointments before or after school, during lunch or during passing periods. On the day of the scheduled appointment, students will be given a pass. This pass will dismiss them from class to see their counselor.

Schooling Options

A variety of opportunities exist for students in the Fort Zumwalt School District. Specific information on each program can be obtained from the Guidance Office.

  • College Credit: Juniors and seniors may take classes for college credit. These credits are offered through various universities/colleges in the state.

  • Alternative High School: Fort Zumwalt Hope High School is an alternative program available to all students in the district who have finished one year of high school in their home building. Hope High is a small school with a focus on individual attention. Students must apply, interview, and be chosen by the staff to attend the school.

  • Lewis and Clark Technical School: Students who have a desire to gain vocational training in the fields such as auto mechanics, construction and computers may apply and be tested to be accepted to Tech School. A complete list of program offerings is available in the Guidance Office.

  • Virtual Education: Fort Zumwalt Schools partners with Launch Virtual Learning to offer students an array of high-quality virtual learning opportunities. Find out more information by contacting the Guidance Office.

Testing

Each year students take standardized tests. Some of these tests are given through the Guidance Office; others are ones for which students must apply.

  • ACT: Juniors will take the college entrance exam at West in the spring; students wishing to take the ACT in addition to this scheduled time may contact the Guidance Office or go to ACT.org.

  • ASVAB: Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery; an option for any junior and students who have not taken a college or career readiness assessment

  • EOC: End of Course Exam; students enrolled in Algebra I, Algebra II (sophomores), Biology, English II, and Government will take the state mandated tests at the end of the second semester of each course

  • Pre-ACT: gives a general idea of how a student will achieve on the ACT; required to be taken by all sophomores

  • PSAT: Pre-SAT; Students may sign up to take this test; optional for juniors and sophomores

Immunizations

Students who are not in compliance with immunization laws must be compliant prior to the start of school. Students without proper immunizations will not be permitted to attend classes until immunizations are complete.

Meningitis-Required Vaccination for 12th Grade Students

All seniors are required to have, and show proof of receiving the Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine (MCV) prior to the start of their senior school year.  Documentation must be provided to our school nurse.  If your child is a senior and you haven’t already done so, please email current vaccination records to carmour@fz.k12.mo.us.

* Please note there is no grace period for completing this requirement.  Students who have not received their MCV will not be permitted to attend school until proof of vaccination is provided.

Leaving Campus

Students are not permitted to leave the school building/grounds at any time during the school day without signing out with the attendance office. If students must leave the building due to illness, a doctor, dentist, orthodontist, etc. appointment, or any other emergency, they must sign out with the Attendance Office. Contact must be made with a parent/guardian in order for students to sign out. Students who fail to follow proper procedures will face disciplinary consequences for truancy.

Library/Media Center

The library is open from 6:45am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday. Students may use the library before and after school and during their scheduled lunch time. Students wishing to use the library during their lunch must sign up before school in the library, as seating in the library may be limited. Students may check out books from the library using their school pin number. No limit exists on the number of books a student may check out, but the librarian may limit circulation of certain titles that are in high demand. Books may be borrowed for a two week period.

Lockers

Typically high school students do not choose to access the lockers, therefore, we do not automatically assign lockers to students. Any student who would like to have a locker can request one by emailing Mrs. VanCleve at lvancleve@fz.k12.mo.us or scanning the QR code outside of Mrs. Weiskopf’s office (located in the main office).

PE Lockers

If a student is taking a PE course, they will be issued a locker. It is imperative the student use the lock that is issued to them by the PE teacher or use a lock the student provides them to secure their items. Without a lock on the locker, anyone can gain access to the student’s property.

*Lockers are the property of Fort Zumwalt West High School and are subject to inspection by authorized personnel at any time. From time to time, law enforcement officers will bring in dogs to sniff out narcotics in / near student lockers and in personal belongings. If a dog alerts officers to a student’s locker or personal belongings, that student’s items will be searched to ensure student safety.

*Students are not to switch lockers or “move in” with others.

*The school is not responsible for items that are lost or stolen.

Makeup Work

If a student misses a day of school, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain and complete all makeup work. The student should check with their teacher, access any class materials and view any notes on Canvas. The student will have one day to make up any of the work missed if the absence is verified.

If a test, project or paper has been assigned prior to the student being absent and the student is aware of the assignment prior to the missed school day, the student is responsible for making up the work the day that they return to school.

Students should check with their individual teachers regarding specific make up policies. Each teacher may have specific requirements that differ from the information listed above.

*If a student misses 3 or more consecutive days, please contact the Guidance Office to access support with gathering makeup work

Parent Portal

Parents can gain access to their students’ grade records by signing up for the Parent Portal. The web-based Parent Portal provides access to student grades in each class, teacher email addresses, daily attendance history and tardy/late arrival records. Parents should contact the Guidance Office or the Main Office to sign up for access to this website. Completion of a short form and a picture ID is required.

School Closings/Emergency Situations

The Fort Zumwalt School District uses an automated calling system as a method of communication in a crisis, emergency, or school closing situation. It is extremely important that school records have the correct phone numbers for your home and (one or two) cell phone numbers. Phone numbers can be changed on the Emergency Verification sheet at schedule pick up day or at any time in the school year by contacting the Guidance Office.

School Day

Hours

The regular school day begins at 7:25am and ends at 2:25pm.

After Hours

The school building remains open after the completion of the school day for various school activities. Students remaining in the building after the regular school day need to be in an organized activity or working under the supervision of a faculty member (i.e. tutoring).

Early Release Days

For all early release days, students participating in after school activities may remain at WHS in the commons or library. Students without activities or tutoring requirements should go home at dismissal.  Once a student decides to stay, they must remain until 2:25, or have parent permission to sign out in attendance. Students are not permitted to work in teachers’ classrooms. Students who choose to leave at dismissal will not be permitted back into the building until 2:25. Furthermore, West High students should not visit our middle or elementary schools, as those buildings are still in session.

Bell Schedule

Passing Periods

All passing periods are 6 minutes in length and allow ample time for a student to make it to their next class. Should a student have difficulty making it to class, they should contact their principal or counselor to plan alternative routes.

Student Dress

Students should remember that school is a place to learn and distracting or inappropriate clothing is not permitted. Fort Zumwalt School District Board Policy JG-R (updated June 2023) states that students are not to wear the following:

  • hats, bandanas, shower caps, or other non-therapeutic headgear inside the school building

  • low cut muscle shirts/halter tops/midriffs/backless or racerback apparel/extremely short shorts/skirts, or sagging pants (undergarments cannot be exposed including boxers and bra straps)

  • clothing/stickers/insignias/colors/visible tattoos that indicate membership in, affiliation with, or support of any gang or similar organization associated with violence, drugs, intimidation or other criminal activity (including rebel flags and swastikas)

  • clothing which promotes drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and/or its products

  • clothing with sexually suggestive messages, messages that promote the occult, or messages of vulgar nature

  • clothing with holes above mid-thigh in inappropriate places or exposing undergarments

  • jewelry and chains that may be used as a weapon including wallet chains that are 3 inches or longer or that present a safety concern

Student Resources

Mental Health Professional

A Mental Health Professional is available to students during the school day. This professional can help students work through personal problems, family issues, school issues, issues with friends, etc. The Mental Health Professional also runs support groups. For specific information about these groups, contact the Guidance Office.

Guidance Counselors

Each student is assigned a guidance counselor based on their last name. These counselors are available to help resolve conflict, answer questions, provide suggestions/help and discuss academic options.

Safeline

Students who need assistance after school hours can contact the FZ Safeline at 314.941.0331. This can be used for tips related to student safety (drug use, gang activity, threats of violence, suicide, etc.)

*Abuse of this line or reports of falsified information will report in disciplinary action.

School Resource Officer

An O’Fallon Police Officer is available during regular school hours for student assistance. As needed, students will be referred to the SRO for situations that can best be handled by him.

Tech School

Students who attend Lewis and Clark Technical School may drive themselves to Tech School. A bus will be available at school at 7:00am for any students who need assistance traveling to Tech School and back to West High for the remainder of their school day.

Transportation

Any student who lives more than a mile from school is eligible for bus transportation. Route listings can be obtained by calling the Guidance Office. Students are not permitted to drive to school unless they have obtained a parking permit. Students riding the bus to school will be dropped off in the circle drive. In the afternoon, buses will be located on the drive in front of the building.

*Sporting event buses for athletic teams will drop off and pick up from the front circle drive

*Activity buses (for transportation home from sports or club activities) are not available.

Work Permits

A student wishing to work before the age of 16 may pick up a Worker’s Permit in the Principal’s Office. The form will be given to students who have maintained good grades and who have already secured a job. For specific questions, contact the main office.

Supplies/Supply Lists

There is not an official school supply list for high school. Students should have pens, pencils, a calculator, and either binders or notebooks and folders for their courses. If there is anything specific that is necessary for a particular class, that teacher will let the students know on the first day of school. Students must bring their Chromebooks to school each day. New students and Freshman who did not attend Welcome Day will get their Chromebooks on the first day of school.

Valuables

It is recommended that students not carry large amounts of cash to school nor should students bring their valuables to school. This includes, but is not limited to cell phones, airpods, headphones, and other personal electronic devices.

  • We are happy to welcome parents and guardians to our building.  For the safety of our students and staff, visitors should be prepared to present a valid Drivers’ License or State ID both at our parking lot entrance as well as our front desk.

  • When entering our campus, visitors should check in with our security team, provide ID, and park in the designated areas. Guests will then be required to “buzz in'' and identify themselves prior to entering the building.  Guests will have their valid Drivers’ License or State ID scanned at the front desk.

  • Visitors need to wear a visitor sticker while in our building and will be escorted to their necessary location.  If a guest simply needs to drop off or pick up an item for their student, there is a table set up in the foyer for this purpose.

Volunteers

  • All volunteers must go through a background check prior to helping with any organization at our school. There are different stages of this process depending on the level of involvement you would like to have. Please do not wait until the last minute to complete this process. Some levels require fingerprinting which could take several weeks to complete. No parent/guardian should begin volunteering until this process is complete and has been approved.

  • Parent volunteers are always needed for Booster Club activities. Contact the Activities Office for more information.
