Pennies for Patients Collection Drive
Key Club Hosts Collection Drive to Benefit Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Posted on 10/28/2019
PenniesKey Club, a service club for high school students, is sponsoring a collection drive to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society the week of October 28-November 1.   The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) is an organization founded by a family who lost their 16-year-old son to leukemia who hoped by raising money to fund research efforts so other families might not suffer the same grief and loss they experienced as a family.  Katie Warrensford, Vice President, Pennies for Patients, shared the following in her letter to schools participating in the 2019 Pennies for Patients collection drive: "LLS was founded 70 years ago, by a family for families.  Since then, we've invested more than $1.3 billion in blood cancer research, helped spark the immunotherapy revolution and become the leading source of free blood cancer information, education and support services."

Did you know?
Approximately every 3 minutes someone in the US is diagnosed with a blood cancer.
More than 1.3 million people are living with or in remission from a blood cancer.
More than one third of blood cancer patients do not survive five years after diagnosis.
Leukemia is the #1 most diagnosed form of childhood cancer.
Approximately 80% of childhood cancer survivors develop a chronic health condition from their treatment.
In the last 30 years, only four blood cancer drugs were created specifically for children.

Key Club will be collecting loose change or cash/check donations for one school week beginning October 28.  Students should give their donations to their sixth hour teacher for a class competition to see which class can collect the most money.  Two pizza party prizes will be awarded based on the dollar amount collected by classes--one for classes with 15 or fewer students and one for classes with more than 15 students.

At Friday night's football game against Timberland (game time is 7:00 pm), look for collection buckets at the entry gates to donate that evening.

Any donation--no matter how great or small--is appreciated and will help fund research to fight childhood blood cancers. For more information about LLS, visit penniesforpatients.org.
