Loran Marquez of Fort Zumwalt West High School has been named this year's Missouri Journalism Teacher Association Teacher of the Year.

Marquez advises The Predator Yearbook, The Solitaire Newspaper and the FZ West HS magazine at Fort Zumwalt West, and she has won numerous awards for her publications including several NSPA First Class ratings with marks of distinction for The Predator yearbook, is a Balfour National Sample, and Balfour's 'Best of' award (which represents fewer than three percent of books published by Balfour annually) being featured in Yearbook Yearbook six years in a row.
Her nominator, Liz Bardin, said, "Loran is an innate leader, task master, a sponge for journalism knowledge and is dedicated to making sure her staff gets the very best training. She attends NSPA/JEA, hosts a spring yearbook workshop for all the schools in her district, attends a summer Intensity leadership workshop, local workshops, Photoshop workshops and an adviser development workshop annually. Her publications receive top awards year after year. But for Loran, the job of advising is more than just receiving awards. It’s about connecting. It’s about caring. It’s about helping create leaders."

Her students shared their thoughts about their award-winning adviser.

"Marquez is like a mom to us because we can always go to her for anything and I can't imagine my high school experience without her. She is so dedicated to making the yearbook the best it can be, sometimes we stay every day of the week after school." -Leilani Jarosz

"Marquez has been almost like a second mom to us--the hours that we spend with her and how much she works with us couldn't compare to any other teacher. I have learned so much from her and wouldn't trade my yearbook experience for anything!" -Grace Rositz

"Marquez has been like a mother to me these past 3 years yet our relationship is also like sisters, finding that within school is something indescribable and I couldn't be more grateful for everything she has done for me." -Olivia Hartman
